Mr. Lanser graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He was employed as an Engineer in private industry for three years, overseeing factory installations and start-ups in Europe and North America , before being appointed FBI Special Agent (SA) in 1989.

SA Lanser's first assignment was in the Tampa Division, where he was assigned White Collar Crime investigations, leading to convictions in money laundering, bank fraud, wire fraud, mail fraud, and bankruptcy fraud cases. He also worked Violent Crime investigations and Major Drug Trafficking Organizations during Temporary Duty assignments overseas.

In 1996 SA Lanser was transferred to the San Juan Division. He was involved in successful Violent Crime, Drug, and Public Corruption investigations. In 1999, he was appointed Supervisory Special Agent in San Juan and was responsible for managing the division's Cyber Crime, Computer and Technical resources.

In January 2003, SSA Lanser was appointed Unit Chief of the Forensic Audio, Video, and Image Analysis Unit (FAVIAU)/Operational Technology Division (OTD) in Quantico , Virginia . He managed the forensic analysis of Digital Evidence for the FBI, state, local, and international agencies. His unit was the nation's first Lab to receive accreditation from the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD) in the Forensic Audio, Forensic Video and Image Analysis disciplines. Unit Chief Lanser established a Memorandum of Understanding with the Metropolitan Police in London for exchange of expertise and personnel in the event of a terrorist attack, and his unit assisted the Metropolitan Police in the recovery of video evidence and identification of subjects of the London Bombings in July 2005. Unit Chief Lanser's unit developed the FBI's Forensic Automatic Speaker Recognition (FASR) system, which the FBI utilized to identify recorded voices of criminals and terrorists, and for which his unit received the Director's Award for Excellence in Scientific Advancement in 2007.

In February 2008, Mr. Lanser was selected as Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge (ASAC) for the Criminal/Cyber Branch of the Buffalo Division. ASAC Lanser has oversight over the Cyber and Criminal Programs in the Buffalo Division of the FBI, which includes its Resident Agencies in Elmira , Rochester , Niagara Falls , and Jamestown .
